A Cruise from Friday June 6, 2014 through Saturday June 14, 2014
I wasn't keeping any notes during this trip, so here's a simple summary.
This trip was for our family of 4 people and was our first try at a cruise. I was curious about the Everything-in-one-Place nature of cruising and had done a lot of research trying to figure out what we might do.
I ultimately chose Royal Caribbean because, at the time, they were very highly rated for their onboard entertainment (and still are, as I write this in April 2026). Among the mainstream cruise lines (Carnival, Holland, NCL, and Royal) they were also, at the time, highly rated for their food (which is NOT still the case in 2026).
For the ship, I selected Oasis. At the time, the Oasis and Allure were both pretty new, and I purposely chose one of them feeling like "if we can't enjoy ourselves on the biggest, flashiest cruise ship around then cruising is NOT for us" - and I wanted it to work out. Why? Because I REALLY wanted to go to Alaska, which had been a life-long Bucket List destination for me, and I was pretty certain that the most likely way that would happen would be via a cruise ship. So I was trying to stack the deck on this trip.
Our cruise was from Saturday June 14, 2014 to Saturday June 21, 2014, sailing out of Fort Lauderdale. As would become our custom for all cruises taken in the future, we flew into the embarkation port the day prior to the cruise start date and stayed at Embassy Suites 17th Street. Dinner was at Gilbert's 17th Streete Grill (or perhaps Duffy's Sports Grill - both of them were on my short list).
The next day we boarded the ship where we had booked Balcony Staterooms 12290 and 12292. Being our first-ever cruise we were excited to experience the (old style) board process where we checked in at the terminal, had our photos taken, and then were issued our SeaPass cards before boarding the ship. Like typical newbies, we let them take a group photo on the gangway before we had the jaw-dropping moment of entering into the ship and seeing the scope and scale of things.
While I don't recall many specific memories, here are some impressions:
- We tried a lot of different things, from different food choices to different ship venues. Although Schooner Bar would become one of our all-time favorite hangouts on future cruises, we didn't discover it on this cruise until we were several days into things.
- We attended all the (family-friendly) shows in the Theater - a tradition that continues today. We also saw the AquaTheater show. I THINK we made it a point to go watch the Belly Flop competition. We've seen it live once, and I suspect it was this cruise.
- We had no qualms about letting the boys roam free. They didn't do that much of it, but we were totally OK with having Andrew run down to get snacks for us while we relaxed on the balcony. We did have our balcony divider opened so we could sit four-wide.
- We tried both Chops and Giovanni's.
- Our route was FLL -> Labadee (where we lounged in the water) -> Falmouth (where we MIGHT have taken a tram trip around the island - we did that somewhere and it might have been this trip) -> Cozumel (which I don't remember at all) -> FLL.
Based on my photos and given that our return flight didn't leave until around 630P it is clear that we must have gone to some kind of museum in FLL after the cruise ended, but I don't have any details. I'm guessing it was the
Museum of Science and Discovery, as that's very "us".
